When I first started just over a week ago, I didn’t really know what to expect of the next month that’ll become my first foray into the “office life”. Being a finance intern at ADP Canada, this has quickly shaped itself to become one of the most enriching and interesting experiences of my life.
For a quick overview, ADP is a global provider of cloud-based human resources and payroll services. From small businesses to multinational enterprises, today ADP Canada employs more than 1,800 associates and pays one in four Canadians in the private sector.
Currently my project is to look into the telecom data for the past year and shape the numbers into trends and correlations that can then be analyzed. This has so far entailed learning how to actually use Microsoft Excel and consolidating seemingly unrelated data into one source. It’s incredibly satisfying seeing the jumble of numbers fall into place and finding the perfect formula that does all the hard work for you.
Of course, any progress I might’ve accomplished during the past few days is largely thanks to my amazing mentor, Jeff, who has both given me insightful advice and guidelines on where to take my project, as well as useful tips such as how to not break my computer. The entire office has a very welcoming and inclusive atmosphere, best seen in the day to day interactions of its inhabitants. People are very open to questions and will always greet you with a smile. From learning about different skills and ideas from a wide range of specialties to wrapping a colleague’s cubical in streamers, I have experienced firsthand how a community can make the entire office a brighter place.
I have much to learn and experience in the coming weeks. I am so grateful to SHAD and ADP for providing me with this opportunity, and I can’t wait to face the challenges and excitement each new day will bring.
