The thumps we make on the doors of voters echo the thumps of our hearts from the excitement of the internship. Though it is only the third day of the internship, the welcoming and fast paced atmosphere have already formed a lasting impression on all the SHADs.
As interns for the Terry Beech MP campaign and Liberal Party in the Burnaby North-Seymour riding, we work on a variety of campaign outreach projects. We've been building outreach databases, calling volunteers, making social media slogans, and canvassing the neighbourhood. We started off the day with an orientation on door knocking, and soon stepped into the field in the afternoon. Despite the glaring heat of the sun, all the interns thoroughly enjoyed conversing with the neighbourhood residents and taking notes on their voting preferences.
Interning for a political campaign encompasses an eclectic and exciting mix of skills. Friday we'll be meeting with Margaret, Trudeau's mother, when we help out with a fundraising banquet. We also got a chance to meet with Canadians passionate about politics. This internship allows SHADs to gain a valuable and more in depth perspective on political campaigning, as well as social responsibilities in a democracy.
