We have all come across the dazzling color displays or the light and sound shows at famous places like our Parliament in Ottawa, Sydney Opera House, Disneyland or at events such as the Olympic Ceremonies. I am fortunate to work with Christie Digital, the brain behind those amazing displays. Christie Digital is at the forefront of such technologies. During the last three weeks, I have been working at the Kitchener office of Christie Digital. This is their engineering head office. It is a large office that has various divisions such as hardware, software, manufacturing, quality control, human resources, etc.
I work in software division. I mainly worked on improving an existing tool that calibrates cameras in order to compensate for distortion caused by the lens. I have implemented a graphical feedback system which gives the user live feedback on how well the images they are taking, to calibrate the camera, cover the camera sensor. The feedback is colour coded so it is easy to understand.
I have also had the opportunity to work with cool projectors and cameras in order to test out the software that I made. My current challenge involves writing a program for communication using serial ports in order to test the quality of projectors. The way in which optics and computer science blend together to create amazing displays of light is quite fascinating.
I learnt many core concepts of C++, such as memory management, and got a wonderful experience of being part of an active software project. In the process, I got to learn not just technical skills, but also got to experience how software development process works. Daily stand-up meetings, code reviews, the Agile software development system, system testing, Scrum Sprint meetings, etc., are all essential parts of the software development process.
Most importantly, I have been able to meet some wonderful people at Christie and make many fantastic friends, including university co-op students who work in our group. This wonderful experience is already helping me in many ways and I am sure that it will help me in future to achieve new heights.
