Today was another exciting day at Kingsway Healthcare Centre! I got to witness an elbow injection, vaccinations, as well as several check-ups.
I remember myself being so overwhelmed to simply stand in the room during the first week, worried and not knowing what to do. As the internship is reaching an end now, I feel myself becoming more and more comfortable when interacting with patients – conversing with them, interviewing them, and being consented to do small things, such as measuring their blood pressure and listening to their breath sounds with the stethoscope.
At my internship, I get to shadow Dr. Abdulla and other practitioners working with their patients. Observing the process from the healthcare provider’s perspective is absolutely insightful and makes me more passionate about the field of healthcare every time. After encountering different cases of illnesses, I get chances to have discussions with Dr. Abdulla about the situations we’ve confronted, ranging from drugs, methods of diagnosis to body systems. It is eye-opening to see how scientific knowledge I learn from books are functioning in real life in illnesses and treatments that I previously had only read about.
I also work in the office, inputting consult notes, referrals, prescriptions and lab results in patients’ charts. I learn every day about the amount of work and the number of different professionals outside of doctor's office it takes for diagnosis and treatment.
Being at Kingsway Healthcare Centre, I learned infinitely more than I ever would have while reading books about the same material. I'm still excited for the new circumstances I will encounter during the final days of my internship. Thank you Dr. Abdulla, healthcare and office staff at Kingsway Healthcare Centre, and SHAD for one of the most enriching experiences of my life!
