Like the first day at SHAD, I was just a nervous and overwhelmed teenager on the first day of my internship at NB Power. Gratefully, I was soon welcomed by 3 other SHAD fellows (interns) and friendly professionals who definitely made my past 2 weeks exceptional and unique. Since the internship is reaching an end at this point, I can now confidently say that every day was full of learning opportunities.
As the primary electrical utility of New Brunswick, I was immediately introduced to different aspects regarding the generation, transmission, and distribution of electricity. The test lab, where they conduct experiments on different gadgets such as heater and smart thermostat, introduced me to vast amount of knowledge on current issues with the grid and the possible solutions. The meetings with engineers and directors broadened my perspective on the electrical field, and their insights on the future of NB Power definitely gave me a chance to think about the future led by technology. If I have to choose the best part at internship, I would choose the trips to different power plants. It was a hands-on experience where I observed the process and gained information on electricity distribution.
Other than exploring the electricity industry, I’m currently working on a research project with other SHAD interns to create the solar energy program for New Brunswick. As SHAD’s DE project, this project requires vast amount of research, great teamwork and individual work. However in a comfortable but passionate working environment, we were able to easily obtain new ideas and facts by conversing with the engineers.
As a customer myself, I was amazed by the technology behind electricity. Importantly, this enriching experience allowed me to explore the structure and the overall environment of the company. I truly appreciate RASD team at NB Power for providing this extraordinary opportunity, and I am looking forward to the last week at NB Power.
