I am very fortunate to have had the chance to work at a place so wonderful as RBC and the experience thus far has been absolutely amazing. I am sure all of you have heard of RBC (Royal Bank of Canada) before, and are familiar with what a bank does. However, as Canada’s largest company with over 10 million customers and 80,000 employees, there is a wide variety of jobs that have to be done to keep the company running. With an increasing focus towards online and computer services, one of the largest sectors in the building is programming. Within the broad sector there are smaller teams, each dedicated towards a specific application or program.
I work in the T&O connect core team as an enterprise integration developer. ‘Connect’ is a Jive community platform which essentially acts like a corporate Facebook. My job is to customize the core program by creating add-on applications. Currently I am working on a cloud application that posts user configurable RSS feeds and emailing lists into a group activity stream. My coworkers are making an AI “chat bot” that provides assistance to commonly asked questions.
My day to day schedule consists of coming into the office at 8:00, taking out my laptop and coding for 7 hours with a 1-hour lunch break in between. if you love programming, then this work schedule is very enjoyable. I am also lucky to have a knowledgeable team that’s always eager to provide assistance whenever I get stuck with my coding.
There is also a super cool floor called the Innovation Lab that buys a lot of gnarly stuff. They recently bought a bunch of Microsoft HoloLens, Google Glass and those wheelie iPad Robots. My best memories at RBC (so far) is definitely touring the Innovation Lab and going lawn bowling with my team. I am very grateful for the opportunity to work at RBC and am looking forward to an exciting last week!
